A mortar bedded verge that is done correctly should last as long as the roof tiles or slates.

Verge detail on new slate roof hello i am having my roof slated at the verge ive noticed that the battens sit flush with the existing bargeboard meaning the slates cannot overghang the verge in the usual way ie with cement board under the battens instead the first slate will just sit flat on the barge board.

A core component of any roofing project undercloak is a strong tile or fibre cement strip that is fixed at the roof verge beneath the battens.

Undercloak needs to lap under the end of the tile batten by no more than 50mm leaving the outer 50 75mm for mortar and a 25 50mm gap between the end of.
